George County, a relatively young county, established in 1910, and named for Senator James Zachariah George. George County had a population of approximately 6,599 residents at that time.

George County is located in southeastern Mississippi and now has a population of approximately 22,681 residents. It is bordered by Greene County to the north, Jackson County to the south, Stone and Perry Counties to the West, and Mobile County, Alabama on the east. George County is a mostly rural county with only one municipality, and that being the City of Lucedale. Although there is not a lot of industry in the county, we are ideally located adjacent to two large metropolitan areas which are heavy industrialized and provide work opportunities for our residents.

There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities available in George County. Over 20,000 acres of the state owned Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area are located within the county and provide citizens with excellent hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as other water related sports such as swimming, boating, canoeing, etc. The Pascagoula River, the largest unobstructed free flowing river in the United States is formed in George County. It flows through Jackson County and into the Gulf of Mexico. Also located within George County are the Leaf, Chickasawhay, and Escatawpa Rivers, as well as Black and Red Creeks.

The proximity of George County to the larger metropolitan areas of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Mobile, Alabama, coupled with an excellent highway system, our wonderful outdoor recreational opportunities, great schools and churches, and easy country living have made George County one of the fastest growing counties in the state.
